Jacques Cartier - New World Explorer for Kids

For Kids

This French explorer made three trips to the New World, looking for a Northwest Passage, a back door to China. Instead, he discovered the St Lawrence River and helped build the fur trade along the river for France. He founded the city of Montreal, and gave the country of Canada its name.

Cartier misunderstood the Iroquois word for village - Kanata - and thought it meant the region.
